A.J. LLOYD & PROJECT 606

CLIENT: CITY OF MONTICELLO

A.J. LLOYD RENOVATION

The A.J. Lloyd Building was Wayne County's first consolidated high school and later served as A.J. Lloyd Middle School. It was originally built in 1940 by the Works Progress Administration as part of the New Deal's plan to provide employment through public works projects and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2013. Local city and county leaders developed a plan to help Monticello revitalize this important community resource and collaboratively create a public space. The design preserves the building's facade and embraces a new use while positively contributing to a sense of identity within the community. The scheme creates a community venue that allows for a variety of uses such as athletic events, concerts and live music, outdoor markets, and general use as a public park. The space is designed to serve both seasonal tourists and local residents, and has garnered attention from employers interested in it as an amenity for employees.

PROJECT 606 RENOVATION

The Project 606 Building, constructed in 1989 as an annex to A.J. Lloyd Middle School, has long served as a cornerstone of the community. Originally utilized as a classroom facility, it later became home to the House of Blessings Soup Kitchen, thanks to its strategic location within a vibrant community hub. Recognizing the building’s potential, the city has taken proactive steps to acquire the property from the school district. With a vision for revitalization, Project 606 seeks to transform the facility into a modern office building, poised to generate over 200 jobs in the area. This initiative not only aims to rejuvenate the structure but also to foster economic growth and enhance the overall well-being of the community.
